Description of V for Victory: Market Garden

The company's blurb, in contrast to normal hyperbole, is an accurate description of these games: 'The V for Victory series sets a new standard for computer wargames. It is the most complete, accurate, and realistic simulation of large scale WWII ground combat ever produced. Yet V for Victory is remarkably easy to learn and play.'

Great AI, interface, and plenty of units and historical variants make these Atomic Games' breakthrough games and designer Keith Zabalaoui a household name in wargaming. Must-haves for every wargamer's arsenal.

Atomic's description of the Market Garden, third game in the series: 'A peaceful lunch is interrupted by thousands of transport aircraft. The greatest airborne operation of WWII is beginning... It is a daring attempt to overcome both natural obstacles and the enemy, penetrate into the heart of Germany, and end the war before Christmas.

V for Victory: Market Garden takes the series to southern Holland. As the British commander, you must take and hold bridges across three major rivers, secure a foothold across the Rhine, and open a corridor for the invasion of Germany. As the German commander, you must delay the British advance, destroy the airborne divisions, and prevent the British army from reaching German territory.'

I played this game on a Mac back in the 1990s and loved it. Still do, although the PC version here has some bugs, most notably about the bridges. Tanks/motorized/mechanized infantry are only supposed to be able to cross special bridges with a 'T' on them. However, those units can still cross 'I' bridges that are meant for infantry. Even after they've been blown up! So while there's bridges you can cross (that you shouldn't be able to), there are also bridges you should be able to cross (but can't - if they've been blown up and repaired.) If the bridge to the east of Arnhem is blown, mechanized vehicles can't cross it even after its been repaired. The same with the bridge to the west of Nijmegan. Both of these bridges are directly next to hexes with brown, sandy soil. Only infantry units can enter these hexes (unless there's a road through them) but once a bridge is blown, that seems to be forgotten. If I'm playing the game and either of those two bridges get blown, I just restart the game. As the Allied player, you can only move infantry units across. As the German player, you can at least use the ferries (if they haven't been blown) to get your units across.
